Detailed Introduction
The Molecular Devices SpectraMax® M3 Multi-Mode Microplate Reader is a highly versatile and configurable laboratory instrument designed to deliver top-tier optical performance comparable to dedicated single-mode detection systems. Utilizing a sophisticated dual-monochromator optical system, the SpectraMax M3 offers precise wavelength selection in 1 nm increments across a broad spectral range, eliminating the frequent need for expensive and restrictive filter changes. This microplate reader supports three primary detection modes: UV-Visible Absorbance (200–1000 nm), Fluorescence Intensity with both top-and bottom-read capabilities (Ex/Em: 250–850 nm), and Luminescence (250–850 nm). A standout feature of the M3 is its integrated dual-mode cuvette port, which allows researchers to easily optimize low-throughput assays using standard cuvettes before seamlessly transitioning them to high-throughput microplate formats (6- to 384-well plates). This flexibility makes it an ideal instrument for assay development, academic research, and medium-to-low throughput drug discovery screening.
To ensure data integrity and ease of use, the SpectraMax M3 is equipped with several patented technologies exclusive to Molecular Devices. The PathCheck® Sensor technology automatically calculates and normalizes absorbance readings to a standard 1 cm pathlength, effectively converting microplate data to equivalent cuvette readings without the need for tedious standard curves. Additionally, the system employs high-quality photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and silicon photodiodes to maximize signal detection while minimizing background noise. The reader is fully compatible with the industry-leading SoftMax® Pro Software, which provides intuitive data acquisition, comprehensive analysis tools, and full compliance with regulatory standards such as 21 CFR Part 11 for GxP environments. With integrated temperature control (ambient +2°C to 60°C), programmable linear shaking, and compatibility with robotic plate handlers like the StakMax®, the SpectraMax M3 is engineered to fit seamlessly into automated workflows, providing reliable, repeatable, and precise results for a vast array of biochemical and cellular applications, including ELISA, nucleic acid/protein quantification, cell viability, and reporter gene assays.
